Signs and Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

When the central point of the retina begins to deteriorate it can limit the patient’s ability to see clearly and in focus, to drive a car, or perform many other daily activities without assistance. This age-related disorder presents at three different levels, and there is no known cure for the disease at this time.

Early AMD

While there are little to no symptoms during this phase of the disease, yellow colored deposits become visible beneath the surface of the retina. These deposits can be observed during a regular eye exam which is another good reason to maintain regular eye care.

Intermediate AMD

This stage can show some slight symptoms, but the majority of the damage is noticed during an exam. The yellow deposits will increase and there will be further changes in the pigmentation of the retina during this stage.

Late AMD

This is the stage where vision loss becomes a noticeable issue. It is unfortunate that for many people their symptoms are not detected until this late stage of the disease. If you are not currently receiving regular eye exams, now is a great time to start!

Protecting the eyes from harmful UV rays, maintaining a healthy diet, and quitting smoking are all good ways to avoid this condition for which there is no cure. Genetics is another factor impacting macular degeneration, as is race, and age. Smoking can also double your likelihood of contracting the condition.
